Уровень окончания: что означает шестилетний номер (и кого он оставляет без внимания)
Reading the Data
Когда этот сайт показывает уровень окончания, это почти всегда федеральный шестилетний уровень завершения для первых, полных, бакалаврских студентов. Everyone outside that cohort is invisible in the number: part-time students, transfers in, students who start at a community college then arrive later, and graduate students.
That definition shapes how the number should be read. A large public university admitting 40,000 students a year reports a rate built only from its freshman block; if half your interest is as a transfer, the statistic barely describes you. Community colleges publish lower six-year rates partly because open admissions brings in students who were never academic majors in high school — comparing their rate to a selective flagships is comparing different populations, not different quality.
What a graduation rate is genuinely good for: it measures whether an institution shepherds its own students to the finish line. Low completion with high enrollment and heavy loan use is the pattern regulators watch, because students who borrow but never finish carry the worst outcomes in the data. High completion at modest cost, by contrast, is the quiet signature of institutions that do the basic job well.
Pair the rate with two neighbors on the school page: first-year retention (do freshmen come back for sophomore year?) and median debt. A 40% graduation rate with near-zero debt tells a very different story than 40% with $20,000 of debt — the first may be a working-adult-friendly campus where finishing simply takes longer, the second is where the warning lights start flashing.
